Jasper Marsalis aka Slauson Malone works as a painter, sculptor, and musician. He has performed in the experimental hip-hop jazz ensemble Standing in the Corner; his painting is inspired by surrealist collage art as well as early postmodernism. Like his father Wynton Marsalis, he meticulously studies the tradition of Afro-American music and culture, jazz as well as blaxploitation films and spoken word poetry – and all this is appropriated for the here and now, in new contexts that perhaps allow a different, productively foreign slant on the own. Vergangenheitsbewältigung is the – original German – title of his new album (Coping with the Past). At donaufestival, he will perform together with cellist Nicky Wetherell.
