In his documentary essay film, Patricio Guzmán takes a twofold view of the past as his starting point. On the one hand, there are the astronomers gazing into the starry sky in the Chilean Atacama Desert, exploring the origins of the universe. On the other, the film focuses on the relatives who search the desert sands around the observatories for the remains of their loved ones – victims of the military dictatorship under General Pinochet who died in the concentration camps there.
