“There is nothing new under the sun”, as it says in the Old Testament book of Ecclesiastes: this maxim could have also given rise to minimal music. Maya Shenfeld is true to this tradition. But what do the notion of eternal recurrence and the aesthetics of repetition still mean in an age marked by radical change? Under the Sun is the title of Shenfeld’s new composition. With analogue synthesizers, woodwinds, field recordings, and vocals, she conjures a musical portrait of a world in which everything seems to revolve around itself and yet nothing remains as it is. Portuguese video artist Pedro Maia stages the music with images from a smouldering marble quarry.
