Japan has always been a great reggae nation. There’s been a buzzing dub and dancehall scene in the country since the 70s. Among the artists who carry the legacy of this music into the present, the producer Gorgonn is the most sinister: with his heavy subsonic basses and his leaden reverb structures, which he calls “sci-fi steppa”. At donaufestival, he presents his debut album Six Paths. It explores the Buddhist cyclic void of the six domains of existence, which humans (re-)enter after death, depending on the karma quota accumulated on Earth. The sixth realm, which Gorgonn loves to visit the most, is evidently the hellish one.
