Wheezing and scraping, rumbles and eruptions. Under a soft, gently glittering sky, grating shreds of noise scratch by; vacuum chambers open up, and the entire universe of sounds is sucked into a black hole: fump! Making music under the name Helm, Axis is British producer Luke Younger’s new album. He paints surreal images of deserted, post-apocalyptic landscapes all while celebrating the resilience of the living. Dotting dark surfaces with light, he slowly builds a sublime and meditative mood, accompanied by a choir of angels that sound like seething diodes: church music for cyborgs in a post-Anthropocene world.
