“There are no pure cultures, that would be ridiculous. The trace of life is not set by the identical, but by the different”: That’s the credo of postcolonial theorist Édouard Glissant – in the current heated debates about identity and cultural appropriation, it’s worth remembering on occasion. Glissant’s foremost inspiration was the book Rhizome by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari. Parisian artist Niamké Désiré alias Ahoa Ssan has, in turn, transformed it into the starting point of a musical work, which links sound material from various artists (including Moor Mother, KMRU, and clipping.) into a mesh of appropriations of appropriations: post-identity-politics.
