What does it sound like when two black holes merge? You will hear just that in William Basinski’s composition On Time Out of Time at donaufestival. It is based on the measurement of gravitational waves that have travelled through space for mor  than a billion years. The passing of time has always been a leitmotif in the work of the New York musician and composer. In his best-known work, The Disintegration Loops from 2002, he played his own recordings from the 1980s on tapes that disintegrated during playback. William Basinski’s music is about finiteness and demise. And yet it is devoid of any romantic introversion. Perhaps you can call it melancholic materialism.
