Brooklyn DJ and producer Emma Burgess-Olsen, who performs under the name UMFANG, is one of the most meritorious club culture activists of the day. The Discwoman collective she co-founded promotes female and queer DJs in a business still largely dominated by heterosexual men. As a musician, too, she has a highly distinctive voice: From tautly restrained ambience and well-mulled dark growls blossom beautiful tracks with tight beats, which develop peculiar funk and groove qualities through just tiny shifts in the rhythmic patterns.
