Ishmael Butler is a legendary figure: Under the name Butterfly, he was part of the trio Digable Planets in the nineties; their debut Reachin’ (A New Refutation of Time and Space) is one of the best albums in hip-hop history. In the duo Shabazz Palaces, he has been combining clinking and clonking techno beats with jazz-like improvisations and spiritually sublime vocals since the end of the noughties: a new refutation of space and time, so to speak, that traces back to Underground Resistance and Sun Ra, and from there points far out into the future and into infinite space.
