The music of Sarathy Korwar is about the flows and sounds of global migration. He was born in New York, grew up in India, and now lives in London. His instrument of choice is the tabla. On his debut album Day to Day, he delves into the chants and polyrhythmic percussion of the Siddi, an ethnic group with African roots living in Gujarat, western India, whose music combines choruses sung in Swahili with sacred Hindu hymns. And all this is enveloped in the aura of the spiritual jazz of Alice Coltrane: a truly cosmopolitan music whose wisdom resides in the precision by which it reconstructs and celebrates the interplay of cultural appropriations.
