Free jazz, gospel, and noise rock: These are the traditions that saxophonist and composer Matana Roberts unites. In her work cycle Coin Coin, she recounts 300 years of African American emancipation and cultural history in a powerful collage of styles, sounds, and historical audio documents; in the twelve-part project, four albums have been released thus far, most recently in 2019 Chapter Four: Memphis. At donaufestival she improvises in a duo with violinist Jessica Moss, known from the post-rock band Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra: music of enormous political urgency – but at the same time, open to all imaginable sounds and inspirations from the past and the utopian future.
