The most exciting beat designs of today can be found in African club culture, from gqom to kuduro and Afrohouse. The duo Lua Preta amalgamates them into a futuristic, minimalist yet dazzlingly rich music, built upon incessantly changing rhythms and inspirations. The singer and rapper Ms. Gai comes from Angola; her producer DJ Mentalcut started his career in the Polish hip-hop scene. On their debut album Diaspora from 2020, they create a truly diasporic sound in which an occasional Euro-disco synth line runs lost among the complex stumbling kuduro rhythms – patinated yet, in this new context, all of a sudden quite fresh again: ripped out of context, thrown back into context.
