FILM

Xavier Burgin’s documentary film traces the chequered history of Black representation and appropriation in horror film, from the racist silent film Birth of a Nation to the blaxploitation wave of the 1970s up to the present day, when African-American directors like Jordan Peele have caused a sensation with films like Get Out or Us. Along the way, Burgin lets numerous Black filmmakers and film fans, such as Keith David and Rachel True, have their say, reflecting on their own love of genre film: “We’ve always loved horror. It’s just that horror hasn’t always loved us.”
