Director Milo Rau filmed the Gospel as a passion play in the southern Italian city of Matera, which has already been staged as Jerusalem by Pier Paulo Pasolini and Mel Gibson given its unique architecture. Together with the political activist Yvan Sagnet, who embodies Jesus, Rau unfolds a biblical story. Yvan returns to the largest of the refugee camps near Matera as a “fisher of men” and finds his “disciples” among those stranded there, who together with peasant women found a “Revolt of Dignity”.
