Talk (DE): Counter Appropriation versus Cultural Appropriation

Program text

THEORY & TALK

Does culture belong to someone or to everyone and thus: to no one? In the discourse of decolonization, cultural appropriation is seen as exploitative, illegitimate ppropriation “from above”. This is contrasted with the idea of counter appropriations, in which the notion of counter-culture resonates. One can interpret these counter-appropriations as a form of resistance “from below” – against hegemonic formations and for new connections. Or also as re-appropriation, claiming cultural resources that marginalized and discriminated voices were never granted.
