SOUND

The darkest and angriest music at this year’s festival comes from the northern English dancer and rapper Tom Heyes. Under the name Blackhaine, he proclaims the fear and despair to be found in the abandoned industrial wastelands of his homeland. Over iridescent electronic surfaces, reminiscent of Coil’s psychotropic industrial sounds and Whitehouse’s harsh power electronics, he conveys the hopelessness and aggression that transpire; he dances to these sounds disturbing choreographies inspired by Japanese Butoh – the violence of society becomes violence against the body, from which it can only be freed, as Blackhaine puts it, through negative ecstasy.
