The Venezuelan transgender artist Arca, who lives in New York, is one of the most influential pop avant-gardists of today. On her 2013 debut &&&&&, she forged a blend of darkly subverted, metallic splintery beats, which also have an uncanny flow. Only on her 2017 album Arca did she first add her vulnerable and wounded voice, which speaks of pain, frustration, and fulfilled desire, all in equal measure. Arca’s work oscillates between the technical and the human, between the virtuosity of electronically mediated production and a longing for immediate exposure of the self and nakedness. This is no less true for her new, epochal five-volume album cycle kick i to kick iiiii from 2021, which she will present at donaufestival.
