SOUND

The Tunisian-Belgian producer Sofyann Ben Youssef chose his stage name out of his love for the TR-808, the legendary drum machine that shaped the sound of hip-hop and house in the 1980s. On his album Maghreb United (2018), he combined its beats with North African rhythms and instruments. His current record Global Control / Invisible Invasion (2020) is based on recordings he made in Chennai, capital of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, which range from trance-ready temple music to rap-like street theatre performances. From all this, AMMAR 808 composes tracks that are rich, dazzlingly allusive, and nevertheless highly danceable.
