Stealing the Stolen: No other band embodies this festival’s motto as consistently and adventurously as 75 Dollar Bill; their music is like an endless row of appropriations of appropriations. Guitarist and instrument builder Che Chen and percussionist Rick Brown founded the project in New York in 2012, but since then the pair have played with a wide array of collaborators. Having studied local musical traditions in Mauritania, they combine African, Arabic, and Asian rhythms and harmonies with the no-wave minimalism of their home city: experimental music that is free, in the truest sense of the word, and always respectful of the histories and realities encapsulated by the music they reference.
