This duo consists of Moor Mother and DJ Haram; both are Philadelphians who have spent years working to combine free jazz, club music, electronic experimentation, and political activism. Moor Mother calls her music “slave punk”: harsh industrial noise and staggering beats awash in heart-breaking laments, as heard on her acclaimed 2017 album Fetish Bones, which tells a story of slavery. In her sets, DJ Haram splices current techno and trap with traditional rhythms from the Levant. On their duo debut Spa 700, the tandem ships Arabic drums and electronic beats, samples, field recordings, and political declamations through distorting filters and groaning hardware: Ring the Alarm is the title of one programmatic piece.
